of LWRs

The objective of the symposium is to review the performance
of materials in LWRs and, in particular, address the causes
of and remedies for in-service failures in order to improve
plant safety and operational life. The meeting is aimed at
plant operators, vendors, manufacturers, safety authorities,
nuclear plant service engineers and researchers.
The symposium is organized by the « Materials Science
and Technology, Non Destructive Testing, Chemistry »
SFEN Technical Section.
It will be held in the prestigious Pope’s Palace, in
the medieval city of Avignon at the crossroads of Provence
and Languedoc, near the Mediterranean, at equal distance of
Italy and Spain.

About the meeting:
New nuclear power plants (NPP) are flourishing all
over the world, even in countries with no history of commercial
nuclear power operation. The coming years shall experience
the construction and start-up of a series of new reactors
bearing high expectations in terms of safety, performance
and flexibility. Significant design innovation and performance
improvement features have been incorporated to meet the highest
of safety standards and desired industrial goals in the third
generation of Light Water Reactors.
The 2011 International Congress on Advances in Nuclear Power
Plants (ICAPP) will review the recent evolution in reactor
physics, thermal-hydraulics, materials, operation and maintenance,
safety and licensing of NPP. The fuel cycle and waste management
strategies are intimately part of the overall picture raising
near term deployment stakes such as environment, public acceptance
and non-proliferation issues. Also, the long term sustainability
challenge shall be emphasized through the many alternative
designs including innovative fast reactors concepts and dedicated
non-electrical systems.

La perception des dangers liés au nucléaire
surestime les risques, principalement en ce qui concerne l'industrie
électronucléaire et le devenir des déchets
qu'elle génère. L'exposition à des doses
faibles, voire de l'ordre de grandeur de la radioactivté
naturelle, est perçue par la plupart des gens comme
facteur inducteur de cancer. La communication sur ces risques
est difficile, sensible et se heurte au sensationnel. Lors
de cette journée seront abordés les aspects
fondamentaux récents de la recherche, ainsi que des
questions d'actualité sur le nucléaire.
